It seems that throughout the year, there is the opportunity to celebrate with Chinese lanterns- even if it means travelling across the globe to be where the fun is. Whilst in Britain we celebrate New Year in January, Thai New Year, or Songkran as it’s known to the locals, falls around the middle of April, and brings with it parties, dancing, well-wishing, and a whole lot of water. Although the main attraction of Songkran is the huge water fights which take place throughout Thailand, most prominently in the central backpacker district of Bangkok, people crowd into temples to pray and well-wish for friends and family as the new year comes round. If you’re planning to visit Thailand during this period, whether this or in the coming years, why not make a unique addition to the festival and release Chinese lanterns wherever you are? Lighting up the sky and looking so beautifully serene as they float away, and you’ll have the knowedge that everyone around you will be making a wish for those they love with your lanterns to help, making it seem much more real. Be careful to avoid the water crossfire though; our Chinese lanterns need to be dry in order to float!
If you have any stories or pictures you’d like to share with us about a time you’ve released Chinese lanterns, please do get in touch.
