During the warmer summer months, it’s not uncommon to head out into the countryside of an evening, spend some time among the grass and wildlife as the sun goes down, and to generally enjoy the beautiful things that nature has gives us. It’s at these times that the wonderful Lightning Bug may appear, with its very own special ‘lantern’ illuminated to warn off pray, or to attract a mate. Also known as the Firefly, these gentle creatures glow different colours, which can be seen at different stages of the dusk; those with a reddish-yellow glow appear first, followed by some with a green-tinted light later in the evening. The light is produced by a series of chemical reactions that take place in their light-omitting organs, which are usually to be found on the lower abdomen of the insect.
Being big fans of anything that lights up and floats or can fly (such as our Chinese lanterns, of course), we think that this phenomenon of nature is something to be celebrated. If you too would like to celebrate this little creature, maybe by releasing some Chinese lanterns in their honour, please do get in touch and one of our team will be able to arrange for our lanterns to be sent out to you.
