As the holiday for the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. draws near, you’re probably wondering how you’ll spend the special day, with who and where. But no matter where you spend this holiday you can always take some Sky Lanterns with you to release in memory of Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. was born into a family of pastors in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929. King was most famous for his inspiring speeches (he delivered more than 2 500) but did a whole lot more than that, he lead protest marches on racial discrimination, wrote essays and articles and even published five books.
He gave his most famous speech “I Have a Dream” in 1963 in Washington DC to an audience of 250 000 people. He then went on to win the Nobel Peace Prize a year later. In 1968 King was assassinated in Memphis while standing on the balcony of his hotel room, he was to lead a protest march.
In his honour, the bill to make his birthday a federal holiday was signed by US President Ronald Regan in 1983.
