Well, not exactly, but it seems people are confused about what wish lanterns are and why they are seeing them in the sky, people seem to be jumping to conclusions and calling the wish lantern a UFO. There have been countless stories in local newspapers that mention UFO sightings, a new story is often published a few days later when one of our customers calls the paper to say it was only them having a party and the UFOs were in fact wish lanterns they had launched!
A wish lantern is like a mini hot air balloon, it emits a glow and floats pretty high in the sky so it’s easy enough to see why people get confused when they see them. Especially when they are seen over water such as the ocean. Some people have thought they were distress signals!
We can tell you they are not UFOs or distress signals, they are simply paper balloons that have been released by people in their own gardens and fields, usually to celebrate something. In most cases you’ll find multiple lanterns that have been let off together usually to celebrate a wedding.
So if you see something that’s small and glowing in the sky – it’s probably just a wish lantern!
